Be “Librarian”

One of the great things about my colleagues at ALA is that they tend to have very interesting backgrounds. Some of them do improv comedy, some are artists, one has a radio show, and one is an honest-to-god-real-live documentary filmmaker. Last month I had the pleasure of seeing the Chicago premiere of Dan Kraus’ second [...]

New ALA Marginalia Blog

I’ve learned a lot of things about ALA (my employer) during my first year working there. Sometimes it’s interesting and helps me understand why something is the way it is. Other times my jaw drops because of an interesting statistic (good and bad). I don’t think you could build an organization that works the way [...]

The Dutch Invasion, Part Deux

Erik and Jaap, the guys from the Delft Public Library who visited the Chicago area in February to talk with librarians about gaming, are coming back this month on a nationwide tour to explore innovation in U.S. libraries. Yes, a nationwide tour. Only these two could pull off something this ambitious. They’ll be driving [...]

Little Mama Library and Trust in the Digital World

This is my new favorite library sign. I always think you can send a better message using humor than heavy-handedness, although in this case, the librarians are also making a great statement about privacy.
I’ve been mulling over a lot lately the trust librarians have built up with users just through our actions [...]

Gaming Roundup

A few things I’ve wanted to blog about in-depth but am just throwing out there for now.

Paul over at ResearchQuest beat me to the punch to post about Carnegie Mellon University’s Library Arcade. This is a must-read, must-play combo for all library staff interested in using gaming in instruction. Heck, maybe we should have [...]

Joost for All

I still get a lot of requests for Joost invitations, so I just wanted to note that the service is finally open to everyone and that you no longer need an invite to download it. Joost away, my friends, Joost away.

Shameless Self Promotion - Blogging Scholarship Finalist
“I have been chosen as a finalist in CollegeScholarship.org’s blogging scholarship- which means I’m up for a $10,000 scholarship. I’m the only library blogger on the list.
The finalists are listed on this page, and you can vote on this page. I’m Karin Dalziel, in case you forgot.” [Musings of [...]

Managing Library 2.0: Leading Libraries into the Future

If you’re attending the Illinois Library Association Conference, I highly recommend this program. I’ve seen the slides and read the narrative, and I think it’s going to be great (and very practical). Should be a lot of interesting discussion, too.

Social MST3K

We should be close to a time when I can watch a movie online with my friends who live in different places. For example, if my friends in Florida, Indiana, and I all want to watch All About Eve, we should be able to stream it online and comment on it MST3K-style. Anyone know of [...]
